Busting the Myths Around Organ Donation

Many people hesitate to register as organ donors because of myths passed down through word of mouth rather than medical fact. One of the most persistent misconceptions is that doctors will not try as hard to save a registered donor's life. In reality, the medical team treating a patient has no connection to the transplant team, and saving the patient's life always comes first.

Another common myth is that organ donation disfigures the body, making an open-casket funeral impossible. Organ retrieval is performed with the same surgical care as any operation, and the body is treated with respect throughout the process.

Some also believe there is an age limit for donation. In truth, medical suitability — not age — determines whether someone can donate, and people in their seventies and eighties have successfully donated organs and tissue.

Educating families about these facts is one of the most effective ways to increase donation rates and save more lives.
